Winter Safety MessageAs winter approaches, chilly New York weather can add challenges and dangers to Military training and everyday life. Some of these dangers may be less than obvious.As Soldiers and Leaders, we should understand and be prepared for these dangers - both in and out of the field. The New York National Guard Safety Office has put together the following tips to help you identify and protect yourself and others from cold weather injuries and other winter hazards.

Lawerence Flynn a former Adjutant General who died on Nov. 12 2017 during his burial ceremony at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on November 17th 2017. In 1986 Maj. Gen. Flynn was appointed by Governor Mario Cuomo as the Adjutant General and Commander of the New York Army National Guard where he served until his retirement in June 1992.

Carbon Monoxide Safety MattersAccording to the Center for Disease Control, Carbon Monoxide (CO) exposure accounts for an estimated 15,000 emergency department visits and 500 unintentional deaths in the United States each year. Gas furnaces, gas water heaters, wood stoves and other combustion-based heating units generate carbon monoxide as a by-product of their operation.CO can't be seen or smelled and the effects of high levels of CO can be easily overlooked or mis-diagnosed. CO poisoning can be prevented however, and the current NYNG Safety Message is all about CO Safety.

NY Naval Militia responds to Lake Ontario floodingSODUS POINT-- Reserve Sailors and Marines who are also members of the New York Naval Militia conduct sandbag operations at Sodus Point N.Y. on May 31 2017. Members of the New York National Guard and the New York Naval Militia which is also commanded by the Adjutant General of New York have produced more and 677000 sand bags to help contain the rising waters of Lake Ontario since directed to assist local officials on May 3 by New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo. The New York Naval Militia is comprised of U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Reserve members who also volunteer to perform state duty when called. A small number of retired Navy and Marine veterns serve as state volunteers.

Troops deploy dams against rising watersGREECE--New York Army National Guard Soldiers deploy the Tiger Dam flood control system along the shores of Braddock Bay in the Town of Greece, N.Y. in response to rising waters on Lake Ontario. The system consists of flexible fabric tubes which are connected and filled with water. The tubes replace sandbags as a flood control mechanism. Since being ordered to assist in flood mitigation duties by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on May 3, New York Army and Air National Guard members, along with members of the New York Naval Militia, have filled more than 673,500 sand bags.

Harris Saifi, a 10th Mountain Division Soldier from Queens, N.Y., pulls security as an aircrew of the New York Army National Guard's 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation airlifts one of a dozen 105 mm howitzers to the 10th Mountain Division's Alpha Battery, 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment during an exercise here on May 4, 2017. In addition to deploying to the field and setting up their logistics area and headquarters, 3rd Battalion troops planned, prepared, rehearsed and executed the airlift mission -- which included 105 mm howitzer ammunition and 10th Mountain Division troops -- within 72 hours of receiving it.

NYNG responds to Lake Ontario floodingHAMLIN--Soldiers from the 642nd Aviation Brigade load sandbags for use by the a Hamlin resident on Tuesday, May 2, in support of Governor Andrew Cuomo's declaration of an emergency along Lake Ontario's shoreline due to high water levels. The state is making available 365,000 sandbags that will be used to shore up areas of Lake Ontario shoreline which are eroding due to high water levels. The New York National Guard is one of the state agencies the governor has directed to respond.

Awards Recognize performance at Fort PolkLATHAM--New York Army National Guard Chief Warrant Officer 3 Kelly Fancher assigned to the Joint Force Headquarters received recognition, Jan. 7, for meritorious achievement during a Joint Readiness Training Center Exercise, at Ft. Polk, La., in July 2016. Fancher received an Army Commendation Medal from New York Army National Guard Col. Dennis Deeley who served as the Support Group Commander for the training rotation supporting the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

Final FlightLATHAM-A New York Army National Guard C12 aircraft, piloted by Chief Warrant Officer 5 Robert Wold, taxis through a rainbow at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Latham, N.Y. on Dec. 21. The rainbow formed as Wold completed his traditional military "final flight" and taxied the aircraft through jets of water sprayed by Albany Airport crash trucks.
