Winter brings cold slippery weather which can lead to falls. The New York National Guard Safety office urges National Guard Soldiers and Airmen to pay special attention to fall prevention in November. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 800,000 people are hospitalized each year because of a fall injury; falls are also the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries. Slips, trips and falls make up 20 percent of all work-related injuries, account for more than 12 percent of workers compensation expenses and cost the government and taxpayers roughly $40,000 per incident.2 Nov, 2018

Cuomo in order to recognize the late Sen. John McCain on Tuesday, August 28. Cuomo directed that POW/MIA flags be added to flagpoles on four state government buildings in Albany and be flown at half-staff in honor of the more than five years McCain spent in captivity as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. POW/MIA flags will be flown at half-staff on the New York State Capitol, Alfred E. Smith Building, New York State Executive Mansion, the Empire State Plaza, and at OGS state office buildings across the state in the same manner.27 Aug, 2018

New York National Guard Soldier Henry Johnson, a member of the 369th Infantry, became one of the first American heroes of World War I a hundred years ago on May 15, 1918, when he fought off a German raiding party using grenades, his rifle and finally his knife and fists. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo directed the National Guard to deploy personnel to Washington County May 5 to assist local emergency responders with tree and debris removal. National Guard personnel are prepared to assist additional storm impacted areas as necessary. May brings nice weather to the northeast and with it, some exceptional motorcycle riding. However, with the freedom, excitement and serenity that riding brings comes responsibility.In 2016, motorcycles made up 3% of all registered vehicles in the US but accounted for 13% of all traffic fatalities; 26% of those riders were alcohol-impaired. It's easy to take enjoyment too far but traffic safety responsibility rests upon riders and drivers alike; a statement issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states "When motorcycles and other vehicles collide, it is usually the other (non-motorcycle) driver who violates the motorcyclist's right of way".The New York National Guard wants you to be motorcycle-aware, ride responsibly, look twice and stay safe this summer!16 Apr, 2018
April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, roughly 481,000 drivers are driving while using cell phones at any moment during a typical day. Distracted driving habits such as texting, grooming, eating, and even reading are responsible for accidents that claimed 3,450 lives in 2016 alone. The New York National Guard Safety Office has some suggestions that can help Soldiers and their families hone their safe driving skills.25 Apr, 2018
