November 26 2018. Nearly 20 volunteers turned out to help load 130 Christmas Trees bound for military families at Fort Bragg N.C. The effort supported Trees for Troops a nationwide campaign of the Christmas Spirit Foundation to deliver donated trees to military personnel and their families across the country and around the globe.

Winter brings cold slippery weather which can lead to falls. The New York National Guard Safety office urges National Guard Soldiers and Airmen to pay special attention to fall prevention in November. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 800,000 people are hospitalized each year because of a fall injury; falls are also the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries. Slips, trips and falls make up 20 percent of all work-related injuries, account for more than 12 percent of workers compensation expenses and cost the government and taxpayers roughly $40,000 per incident.

STRATTON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE--An LC-130 assigned to the New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift Wing leaves Stratton Air National Guard Base on Sept. 16 en route to McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. The 109th Airlift Wing flies the only ski-equipped planes in the U.S. military which can land on snow and ice. The 109th provides support for National Science Foundation research on the continent as part of the U.S. militaries Operation Deep Freeze.

LUMBERTON, N.C.-- Pararescue Airmen Tech Sgt. Ryan Dush and Staff Sgt. Griffin Elzey, both members of the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing, are lowered out of a HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter assigned to the wing during a rescue mission in Lumberton, North Carolina on Sept. 17, 2018 in this still from a helmet mounted video camera. The two Airmen were descending to make an assessment of how many people were in the house, surrounded by flood waters and the best way to get them out. Eventually 15 people were rescued by two HH-60s, one flown by New York Air Guardsmen and the other by an aircrew from the California Air National Guard's 129th Rescue Wing.

ROCKY POINT, N.C.--Army Staff Sgt. Charles Gabriel, a member of the New York Army National Guard's Company C, 1st Battalion 171st General Support Aviation Battalion, works with members of the FEMA Seach and Rescue Task Force 6 and the Greensboro, North Carolina Fire Department to rescue a 78-year old man from the roof of his house in Rocky Point, North Carolina on Sept. 18, 2018. The man was hoisted up to a hovering UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter in a Stokes basket. The New York Army National Guard deployed ten Soldiers and two UH-60 helicopters from Company C 1-171st GSAB to assist in the Hurricane Florence response.

Helocasting is a technique that involves personnel exiting a helicopter into water. It is used to insert small groups behind enemy lines.

ALBANY-New York National Guard members add a flag honoring POWs to the American flag flying at half-staff at the Empire State Plaza at the direction of New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo in order to recognize the late Sen. John McCain on Tuesday, August 28. Cuomo directed that POW/MIA flags be added to flagpoles on four state government buildings in Albany and be flown at half-staff in honor of the more than five years McCain spent in captivity as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. POW/MIA flags will be flown at half-staff on the New York State Capitol, Alfred E. Smith Building, New York State Executive Mansion, the Empire State Plaza, and at OGS state office buildings across the state in the same manner.

LC-350 is a 35-foot long landing craft style boat made by Munson a Washington State firm. The boat can carry 27 personnel three tons of supplies or a small truck.

GARDEN CITY-- Members of the New York Guard commo team assemble and work together to cordon off an area, unpack radio equipment and establish three operational field communications stations just as they would had there been a major emergency at the United States Marine Corps training Center in Garden City on June 21, 2018. The three field stations were powered by batteries and solar panels to simulate operations during a loss of power which might affect normal communications methods. The radio operators successfully provided SITREPs to other field communications stations across New York State.

New York National Guard Soldier Henry Johnson, a member of the 369th Infantry, became one of the first American heroes of World War I a hundred years ago on May 15, 1918, when he fought off a German raiding party using grenades, his rifle and finally his knife and fists. SLEEPY HOLLOW-- New York Guard Acting Commander Colonel David J. Warager delivers remarks at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow N.Y. during a May 6 ceremony commemorating 40 members of the New York Guard who died during the influenza pandemic of 1918 while guarding the New York City water system during World War I. Their names are inscribed on a plaque set in a boulder taken from Bonticon Crag in the Shawangunk Mountains along the line of the aqueduct that they protected. The memorial is constructed on property donated by the Rockefeller family.

LINCOLN, Nebraska-- Chief Warrant Officer 4 Thomas Grove with the New York National Guard competes in the Lincoln National Guard Marathon May 6 2018 in Lincoln Nebraska. Members of the National Guard are running to qualify for the All Guard Marathon Team. Grove finished in 50th place out of 132 male racers during the event. New York Army National Guard Capt. Matthew Kane also took part in the race and finished 38th in the male race category.

LIVIV, Ukraine--- New York Army National Guard Soldiers from the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team assigned to Joint Multinational Training Group Ukraine meet with academic leaders during a visit to the Lviv Polytechnic National University Apr 26. During the visit the Soldiers met with the universitys students and were given a chance to talk about the JMTG-U mission and their experiences in Ukraine.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo directed the National Guard to deploy personnel to Washington County May 5 to assist local emergency responders with tree and debris removal. National Guard personnel are prepared to assist additional storm impacted areas as necessary. The Governor also issued an update on the severe storms that moved through the eastern portion of upstate New York on Friday, May 4. Storms accompanied by strong, gusty winds of 40 mph to 60 mph knocked out power to over 100,000 customers and toppled trees and limbs, damaging some homes in these regions. Courtesy photo.

May brings nice weather to the northeast and with it, some exceptional motorcycle riding. However, with the freedom, excitement and serenity that riding brings comes responsibility.In 2016, motorcycles made up 3% of all registered vehicles in the US but accounted for 13% of all traffic fatalities; 26% of those riders were alcohol-impaired. It's easy to take enjoyment too far but traffic safety responsibility rests upon riders and drivers alike; a statement issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states "When motorcycles and other vehicles collide, it is usually the other (non-motorcycle) driver who violates the motorcyclist's right of way".The New York National Guard wants you to be motorcycle-aware, ride responsibly, look twice and stay safe this summer!

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, roughly 481,000 drivers are driving while using cell phones at any moment during a typical day. Distracted driving habits such as texting, grooming, eating, and even reading are responsible for accidents that claimed 3,450 lives in 2016 alone. The New York National Guard Safety Office has some suggestions that can help Soldiers and their families hone their safe driving skills.

BAGRAM, AFGHANISTAN-- The incoming command team from the New York Army National Guards 501st Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Maj. Robert Crudden and Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin Conklin uncased the organization colors at the Transfer of Authority ceremony on Thursday, March 29th, at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. The 501st Ordnance Battalion (EOD) sent 19 Soldiers to Afghanistan where they are responsible for overseeing Explosive Ordnance Disposal units-- both American and Coalition-- throughout the country.

The county was hit hard with a winter storm knocking down trees and causing widespread power outages.

The exercise which was designed to resemble a vehicle collision was used to test the JMTG-U Medical Sections readiness and capabilities. Emily Sweeney, assigned to Joint Force Headquarters, will be representing the United States in the women's luge competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. Sweeney is enrolled in the Army's World Class Athletes Program which lets Soldiers serve and prepare for the Olympics.

Ashaun Howard a motor transport operator attached to the 719th Transportation Company New York Army National Guard performs last minute checks on Humvees designated for use as part of the Guards response to the winter storms at Camp Smith Training Site N.Y. FAIRPORT, N.Y.--The Military Forces Honor Guard of the New York Army National Guard render honors during the funeral for Spc. Joseph Nelk a soldier assigned to Alpha Troop 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry Regiment in Fairport N.Y. Dec. 23 2017. Nelk passed away while deployed to the Ukraine as part of the 7th Army Training Commands Joint Multinational Training Group.
