SCHYULERVILLE-- Two members of the New York Army National Guard Honor Guard present an American flag to the family members of Corporal Walter Smead, a Korean War Soldier who was originally declared missing in action in 1950, at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville New York on Sept. 20 2021. Smead, a member of the 7th Infantry Division, was declared missing in action following a series of battles around the Chosen Reservoir in December of 1950. The 501st Ordnance Battalion and its 23 Soldiers serve as the command and control element for Task Force Hellhound, the forward deployed EOD task force responsible for military EOD forces, forensic exploitation and civilians across U.S. Central Command supporting Operations Spartan Shield, Inherent Resolve and Freedom's Sentinel, replacing members of the Alabama National Guards 441st Ordnance Battalion (EOD). According to the Veterans Administration, more than 6,000 Veterans lost their lives to suicide in 2017, and that number continues to rise. Stresses of Military life can be tramatic, or acute - building gradually over time - escalating the Veteran suicide rate to roughly twice that of the population as a whole. A third of the regiment's 3,000 men were killed or wounded in this advance.
