FORT INDIANTOWN GAP-- New York Army National Guard Major General Jack James, accepts the colors of the 42nd Infantry from Major General Ray Shields, the adjutant general of New York, during change of command ceremonies on Monday, Nov. 18, at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. The division headquarters is at the post taking part in Warfighter training in preparation for a deployment to the Middle East. Representatives of the division's subordinate brigades from across the northeast took part in the ceremony. James replaced Major General Joseph Biehler as the division commander.

GREENLAKE --A New York Army National Guard UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter conducts fire fighting operations near Greenlake New York on Nov. 12 2024 while fighting the Jennings Creek Sterling Forest State Park fire. The UH-60s can carry 660 gallons in their Bambi buckets. New York Army National Guard UH-60s and CH-47s played a key role in bringing the s5,000 acre wildfire under control.

JENNINGS CREEK-- The view from a New York Army National Guard UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter conducting fire fighting operations on Monday, Nov. 11, 2024 at the 5,000 acre Jennings Creek/Sterling Forest State Park fire on the New York/ New Jersey border in Orange County, illustrates the challenges facing fire fighters traying to contain the blaze on the area's hillsides. The New York Army National Guard launched two Black Hawks on Nov. 11 and on Nov. 12 to support Department of Environmental Conservation firefighting efforts. Over the course of two days the Army Guard aircraft dropped over 117,000 gallons of water on the flames.

SCOTIA-- Airmen from the New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift Wing prepare to launch an LC-130H "Skibird" heading for Antarctica at Stratton Air National Guard Base in Scotia, New York on October 17, 2024. The wing launched two aircraft with ten Airmen on the five day flight to Christchurch, New Zealand on the 17th and three aircraft and aircrew the day before. Five LC-130s and 400 Airmen will support the National Science Foundation Antarctic research mission from now until Februar, 2025.

Nicole McKenzie the supply sergeant assigned to the 1156th Engineer Co 53rd Troop Command secures a forklift onto a commercial trailer headed to South Carolina to assist disaster response forces in the wake of Hurricane Helene Camp Smith N.Y. STEWART AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE -- Airmen assigned to the New York Air National Guard's 105th Airlift Wing test their strength in a tug-of-war match during the wing's Comprehensive Airman Fitness Day on Sept. 8, 2024 at Stewart Air National Guard base in Newburgh. Airmen from the wing's squadrons competed in a variety of sports to include weightlifting and chess during the day. The Base Defense Force finished first in the competition.

The 105th Fire Department members collaborated with their Portuguese counterparts in training simulations and 24/7 real world operations during a two-week deployment for training.

JERICHO, VERMONT -- New York Army National Guard Sgt. Peter Fillion representing finishes the final ruck of the National Guard's National Best Warrior Competition on August 8 2024 at Camp Ethan Allen near Jericho Vermont, prior to being declared the winner in the junior enlisted category. The Best Warrior Competition is a physically and mentally challenging five-day event that tests Soldiers on a variety of tactical and technical skills. Fillion, an Amherst resident and a member of the 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry, will now compete for top honors Army-wide and represent the Army National Guard in the Army's Best Squad competition.

WESTHAMPTON BEACH--The first HH-60W " Jolly Green II" search and rescue helicopter assigned to the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing based at Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton Beach, flies over the north shore of Long Island, on August 4, 2024. Airmen from the 106th rested the upgraded functions of the aircraft over land and water during the wings historic first HH-60W flight. Named after the HH-3 "Jolly Green Giant" helicopters once flown by the wing, the new aircraft has greater range and electronics systems than the HH-60 Pave Hawk.

Peter Fillion prepares to traverse a rope bridge during the National Guard's 2024 National Best Warrior Competition on Aug. 4 2024 at the Ethan Allen Firing Range near Jericho Vermont. Cadre from the Army Mountain Warfare School supported the event which included tackling a rope bridge ascending a cliff face with a Prusik knot and rappelling. In total 14 Soldiers and noncommissioned officers from 13 states are competing to be named the National Guards top Soldier and NCO. Fillion is representing the northeastern region at the competition.

F.S. GABRESKI AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE -- Children of Airmen assigned to the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing, salute from the back of an HC-130 Combat King II search and rescue aircraft during the wing's annual Galaxy Camp on July 10, 2024. Forty kids participated in the wing's 18th week-long program for military children which included science, engineering, technology and math events and field trips. The camp kicked off on July 8 and ran through July 12.

July 23 2024. Dr. Denise Murrell PhD Merryl H. & James S. Tisch curator at large with The Metropolitan Museum of Art organized the exhibition and hosted the Soldiers on the tour. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is sometimes simply referred to as The Met.

Tradewinds is a U.S. Southern Command-sponsored regionally oriented annual exercise and is part of the Joint Chiefs of Staffs Large Scale Global Exercise 24 a series of all-domain military exercises executed alongside Allies and partners around the globe. The New York Army National Guard deployed 45 Soldiers and four UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters to participate in the exercise.

Wilfred Spike Mailloux, a 100-year old veteran of the New York National Guards 27th Infantry Division who fought on the Island of Saipan during World War II, at St. Michaels Cemetery in Waterford, New York on May 7, 2024. Mailloux, a member of B Company, 105th Infantry Regiment, was wounded during a massive Japanese Army banzai attack against the regiment on July 17, 1944. Mailloux, who enlisted in the National Guard to earn $5 per drill, was the last surviving member of the Cohoes-based company.

ALBANY-- New York National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 42nd Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade, along with the family and friends of Chief Warrant Officers 2 John Grassia III and Casey Frankoski, fill the Empire State Convention Center in Albany during a unit memorial ceremony honoring the two pilots held on April 21, 2024. Grassia and Frankoski were killed when their UH-72 Lakota helicopter crashed during a March 8 mission along the Texas border. A Border Patrol officer on board the helicopter was also killed.

NIAGARA FALLS --New York National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from the 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry Regiment and 107th Attack Wing witness the beginning stages of the total solar eclipse covering the region on April 8 2024 at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station in Niagara Falls New York.. The Soldiers and Airmen were on duty to support local officials if required. Over 150 service members across New York State were activated to potentially support civil emergency services due to the huge increase in tourism generated by the event.

CAMP BUEHRING,Kuwait-- New York Army National Guard SPC Junhee Choi, a member of the 101 Expeditionary Signal Battalion, prepares for the individual weapons qualification using the Engagement Skills Trainer 2000 during the 160th Theater Signal Brigade Best Squad competition at Camp Arifjan Kuwait. Between March 18 and 24, the competitors went through a rigorous gauntlet of tasks and events including the Army combat fitness test individual weapons qualification timed 12-mile ruck march land navigation and a review board to determine the best squad in the brigade. The 101st mission is to provide tactical communications throughout the United States Central Command Area of Operations. The unit is currently spread out across nine countries within the middle east.

ARCTIC OCEAN (March 9 2024)-- A C-130 Hercules assigned to the 109th Airlift Wing part of the New York Air National Guard flies over East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare Operator (SEALs) Norwegian Naval Special Operations Commandos and the Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Hampton (SSN 767) during an integration exercise designed to bolster skills in an Arctic environment March 9 2024 as part of Arctic Edge 24. AE 24 provided Special Operations Command North the opportunity to test a range of capabilities and response options to deter disrupt degrade and deny competitor activity in the Arctic in support of globally integrated layered defense and deterrence of the homeland.

ANTARCTICA--An LC-130 Hercules "Skibird" assigned to the New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift Wing flies past Mount Erebus, an active volcano in Antarctica, after taking off from the ice runway serving McMurdo Station, the center of United States Antarctic Program research in December 2023. The 109th Airlift Wing flies missions to Antarctica resupplying science stations across the continent.

YONKERS--New York Air National Guard Airmen assigned to the 105th Airlift Wing Honor Guard provide funeral honors for retired Air National Guard Tech. Sgt. Mario Scaduto in Yonkers New York on Dec. 16 2023 accompanied by members of the Stewart Air National Guard Base Fire Department. Scaduto had served in the 105th Civil Engineering Squadron. He was one of over 1900 veterans honored by the New York Air National Guard in 2023.
