Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, in Schuylerville, N.Y. on December 15, 2017. Ostwald who served in the U.S. Army from 1951-54 was one of the 11,170 veterans the New York Army and Air National Guard provided funeral services for during 2017.

JFK International Airport-- Soldiers assigned to the New York Army National Guard's 442nd Military Police Company return home to New York through JFK International Airport on Dec. 16, 2017. The company deployed more than 100 Soldiers to Puerto Rico to support local police in the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The last 40 Soldiers returned hom on Dec. 16.

YAVAROV COMBAT TRAINING CENTER, Ukraine--Leaders render honors during a memorial service honoring Specialist Joseph Nelk a New York Army National Guard Soldier who died of apparent natural causes while on Dec. 10 2017 while serving as part of the Joint Military Training Group- Ukraine at the Yavarov Combat Training Center Ukraine. The memorial ceremony was conducted on Dec. 12 2017 and included Soldiers from the United States Canada Ukraine Great Britain Lithuania and Ukraine.

NEW YORK-- Volunteers from the New York National Guard and members of the New York Guard pack boxes with groceries for a Thanksgiving meal at the Jacob Javitts Center in New York on Nov. 20, 2017. The boxes, packed as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's "NY Holiday Giving" event contained a turkey, stuffing, cranberries, corn, a bottle of soda, Pie and a Walmart shopping bag, which were then delivered to locations throughout the State by New York State Department of Transportation.

Lawerence Flynn a former Adjutant General who died on Nov. 12 2017 during his burial ceremony at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on November 17th 2017. In 1986 Maj. Gen. Flynn was appointed by Governor Mario Cuomo as the Adjutant General and Commander of the New York Army National Guard where he served until his retirement in June 1992.

ANTARCTICA--This LC-130 Skibird crew landed at the South Pole Station with minimum visibility and maximum crosswinds and then were forced to make an emergency weather divert to Terra Nova Bay when extreme weather made it unsafe to land at McMurdo Station on Nov. 9 2017. Colin Stewart, from Garden City, a member of the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment presents a memorial wreath on behalf of the Rainbow Division Veterans Foundation, at the 42nd Division Memorial in Garden City, N.Y. on Nov. 10, 2017. The foundation, which has a mission to memorialize the 42nd Division, provides for wreaths to be presented at the monument on veterans day. According to the Center for Disease Control, Carbon Monoxide (CO) exposure accounts for an estimated 15,000 emergency department visits and 500 unintentional deaths in the United States each year. Gas furnaces, gas water heaters, wood stoves and other combustion-based heating units generate carbon monoxide as a by-product of their operation.CO can't be seen or smelled and the effects of high levels of CO can be easily overlooked or mis-diagnosed. CO poisoning can be prevented however, and the current NYNG Safety Message is all about CO Safety.

DaVon Thomas a member of A Company 27th BSTB of the New York Army National Guard checks tie downs before more than three dozen vehicles from the 152nd Engineer Support Company in Buffalo were shipped by barge at the Crowley Liner facility at Petty Island in Pennsauken New Jersey on October 12. The mix of high mobility trucks Humvees and construction equipment were shipped to Puerto Rico on Oct. 13as part of the ongoing recovery efforts after Hurricane Maria. PUERTO RICO--Soldiers of the New York Army National Guards 3rd Battalion and the 442nd Military Police Company conduct an aid mission in Ciales Puerto Rico on Oct. 11 2017. Five Soldiers from 442 MP Company provided security while UH-60s conducted three trips with five pallets of water and six pallets of MREs.The battalion deployed 60 Soldiers and four UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters to Puerto Rico to conduct relief missions in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, PA--Leaders of the 42nd Infantry Division of the New York Army National Guard conduct a Rehearsal of Concept (ROC) drill at Fort Indiantown Gap Pennsylvania on Oct. 4 2017 as the division moves into the first day of its Warfighter exercise. Leaders talked through key mission points to ensure that leaders at all levels have a shared operational concept. Warfighter tests the ability of division and brigade levels to conduct staff functions.

NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION-- Soldiers from the 105th Military Police Company of the New York Army National Guard board a C-130 assigned to the 152nd Airlift Wing of the Nevada Air National Guard at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station on Sept. 25, 2017. The Soldiers are being ferried to the U.S. Virgin Islands where they will provide hurricane relief Niagara Falls N.Y. Sept. 25 2017. More than 20 members of the 105th MP Co. loaded equipment and personnel and began their deployment to the U.S. Virgin Islands ahead of more Soldiers flying later in the week.

St. MARTIN-- Americans stranded on St. Martin following Hurricane Irma fill the bay of an HC-130 assigned to the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing on Sept. 9, 2017 during an evacuation mission. The wing deployed 130 Airmen, 3 HHK-60 Pave Hawk helicopters and 2 HC-130s to Puerto Rico to assist in search and rescue missions.

CAMP SMITH -- During the 22 April 2017 drill at Camp Smith, CPT Dunbar and WO1 Bashir of the 244th Medical Group conducted a CPR and First Aid certification course for New York Guard service members.While the class was a refresher for some, it was essential that these NCOs and officers practiced life saving skills before reporting to their duties at Annual Training later this year.

CAMP ARIFJAN, KUWAIT--Master Sgt. Edgar Ponce of the New York Army National Guard's 369th Sustainment Brigade carries the brigade colors over the finish line in the inaugural Harlem Hellfighter 5K run held at Camp Arifjan Kuwait on June 2 2017. The event was held to celebrate the 104th anniversary of the formation of the historic New York National Guard unit. The unit was given their historic nickname Hellfighters by their German opponents in WWI for their remarkable prowess on the battlefield.

SODUS POINT-- Reserve Sailors and Marines who are also members of the New York Naval Militia conduct sandbag operations at Sodus Point N.Y. on May 31 2017. Members of the New York National Guard and the New York Naval Militia which is also commanded by the Adjutant General of New York have produced more and 677000 sand bags to help contain the rising waters of Lake Ontario since directed to assist local officials on May 3 by New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo. The New York Naval Militia is comprised of U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Reserve members who also volunteer to perform state duty when called. A small number of retired Navy and Marine veterns serve as state volunteers.

RONKONKONMA-- Four New York Army National Guard Soldiers who received New York's highest medal for heroism, the Medal for Valor, stand in formation during award ceremonies on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Army Aviation Support Facility # 1 in Ronkonkoma, N.Y. The men were recognized for rescuing the pilot of a light plane which crashed in flames on Feb. 26. They are, from left, Sgt. GREECE--New York Army National Guard Soldiers deploy the Tiger Dam flood control system along the shores of Braddock Bay in the Town of Greece, N.Y. in response to rising waters on Lake Ontario. The system consists of flexible fabric tubes which are connected and filled with water. The tubes replace sandbags as a flood control mechanism. Since being ordered to assist in flood mitigation duties by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on May 3, New York Army and Air National Guard members, along with members of the New York Naval Militia, have filled more than 673,500 sand bags.

Andrew Cuomo in Kendall N.Y. May 18 2017. Members of the New York National Guard have filled more than 240000 sandbags which are set up at affected areas such as homes and businesses in the effort to protect them from damage.

HAMLIN--Soldiers from the 642nd Aviation Brigade load sandbags for use by the a Hamlin resident on Tuesday, May 2, in support of Governor Andrew Cuomo's declaration of an emergency along Lake Ontario's shoreline due to high water levels. The state is making available 365,000 sandbags that will be used to shore up areas of Lake Ontario shoreline which are eroding due to high water levels. The New York National Guard is one of the state agencies the governor has directed to respond.

The Cadets were flying to Fort Ethan Allen Vt. for a training exercise on board three New York Army National Guard UH-60s. The flight provided the cadets with an opportunity to learn about Army aviation and the National Guard.

BINGHAMTON-- New York Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 827th Engineer Company clear snow from a parking lot at tehe State University of New York Binghamton on March 18, 2017 as part of the New York National Guard response to the noreaster storm which covered New York with snow on March 14 2017. The university needed parking lots cleared of three feet of snow so that operations could resume.

DEPOSIT-- New York Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 827th Engineer Company clear snow from the streets of Deposit N.Y. on March 16 2017 as part of the New York National Guard response to the noreaster which dumped more than three feet of snow on the region on March 14 2017. New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo mobilized more than 1400 National Guard Soldiers and Airmen with up to 2000 on standby in response to the storm.

The Soldiers are prepared to provide mobility support or traffic control help to local authorities. The Soldiers were among 2,000 Guard Soldiers and Airmen who Gov. Andrew M. HAWAII-- A Pararescueman from the 103rd Rescue Squadron of the 106th Rescue Wing signals a low flying C-17 Globemaster following a successful jump during joint training with Human Space Flight Support Detatchment 3 at Marine Core Base HawaiiMarch 5 2017.During this training a rigid inflatible boat (known as a Hard Duck) was dropped from a C-17 along with several jumpers and an inflatable device known as the Front Porch.This device is intended to be mated to the Orion spacecraft and can be used to support astronauts who have made a water landing in the Orion spacecraft following a flight.

The Front Porch would provide a place to offer astronauts medical care after the crew module splashes down at the end of a flight. The New York pararescuemen are participating in joint NASA/Department of Defense training exercises to test recovery equipment for NASA's new spacecraft, the Orion.
