Is it raining? Is it snowing? Both? Northeast winter weather is often a dangerous mix of rapidly-changing weather conditions, which can make a casual commute far more dangerous than we are aware. Add an invisible threat like black ice to the mix and that casual commute can become catastrophic. The NY National Guard Black Ice Awareness Safety message has tips on how to spot and tame Black Ice driving dangers.

LATHAM-New York Army National Guard members who recently graduated from the Army War College at Carlise, Pa., present a copy of a painting their graduating class had commissioned to the adjutant general of New York, Maj. Gen. Raymond Shields, at the Division of Military and Naval Affairs, Latham, N.Y., Dec. 30, 2019. The painting depicts the World War I "lost battalion," the artist is Lt. Col. Scott DeJesse, also a 2018 graduate, the unit is the 1st Battalion, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Statue of Liberty Division. The National Guard turns 383 on Friday Dec. 13. That's the date in 1636 when the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony voted to organize the colony's militia into three permanent regiments. Today these are the oldest in the country. New York can trace it's first militia back to the Burger Guard formed by the Dutch East Indian Company on Manhattan in the 1640s.

New York Army National Guard Soldiers of the 42nd Infantry Division, (left) Maj. Michael Tillistrand the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion plans officer and Lt. Col. Gurpreet Singh, the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion Commander, lay a memorial wreath at the Gen. Douglas MacArthur memorial located at West Point, N.Y on November 8, 2019. MacArthur was the officer who suggested the formation of a multi-state division in 1917. He later went on to command the division. The wreath is one of several presented at the 42nd Infantry Divisions markers on, or around, Veterans Day to commemorate the history of the division which was organized over a hundred years ago. The wreaths are purchased by the Rainbow Division Veteran's Foundation and presented by New York Army National Guard Soldiers.

Sept. 15 2019. Retired and former Airmen assigned to the 107th Tactical Fighter Group reunited to commemorate their return from the Republic of Vietnam more than 50 years ago. The unit deployed more than 400 Airmen to Tuy Hoa Air Base in January 1968 in response to the Pueblo Crisis and all members returned home by June 1969 with honor.

The 369th Sustainment Brigade traces its history back to the 369th Infantry Brigade of World War I. The African-American unit was nicknamed the Harlem Hell Fighters and spent more time in the front lines than any other unit in the war. Northern Strike 19 is a National Guard Bureau-sponsored exercise uniting service members from more than 20 states multiple service branches and numerous coalition countries during the last two weeks of July 2019 at the Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center and the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center both located in northern Michigan and operated by the Michigan National Guard. The accredited Joint National Training Capability exercise demonstrates the Michigan National Guards ability to provide accessible readiness-building opportunities for military units from all service branches to achieve and sustain proficiency in conducting mission command air sea and ground maneuver integration together with the synchronization of fires in a joint multinational decisive action environment.

Willard Magoon from the Vermont National Guard on Thursday, June 13 at the Albany International Airport. Magoon was a member of B Company, 186th Brigade Support Battalion, 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team who was killed during a training accident at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

ROUND LAKE --A UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter prepares to conduct water bucket training in Round Lake N.Y. April 17 2019. The collapsible buckets which are hung underneath the helicopters can dump 560 gallons of water on a fire each time they are used. Each spring Army National Guard helicopter crew members and maintenance personnel retrain on how to attach the buckets to Black Hawk helicopters and then practice picking up water and dumping it.

STRATTON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE N.Y--An ATV is loaded onto a CH-47 Chinook from the New York Army National Guards Bravo Co.3rd Battalion 126th Aviation in Rochester, New York on March 18 2019. The ATV accompanied by a five person "strike team" that is part of the 2nd Civil Support Team here. The strike team concept allows for rapid deployment capabilities. ALBANY-- New York Army National Guard Spc. Ibrahim Bakayoko and Pfc. Tiffany Joseph pose with Judge Daniel Stewart the United States Magistrate Judge for Northern District of New York at the U.S. District Court in Albany N.Y. on February 15 2019 after being sworn in as American citizens. Bakayoko is originally from Abidjan Ivory Coast and Joseph was originally from St. George Grenada. During the citizenship ceremony 49 new American citizens took the oath.

A member of the New York Air National Guards 109th Airlift Wing performs maintenance on an LC-130 ski equipped aircraft at McMurdo Station Antarctica on December 17 2018. The 109th Airlift Wing provided aviation support to U.S. Antarctic research mission from October 2018 to February 2019 as part of Operation Deep Freeze the U.S. military support to the National Science Foundation. The mission wrapped up at the end of February.

NIAGARA FALLS -- Airmen from the New York Air National Guard's 107th Attack Wing and the Air Force Reserve's 914th Airlift Wing display Valentine's Day cards from local school children which were delieverd to them by Erie County legislators Lynne Dixon and Ed Rath on Feb. 14, 2019. Each year local officials bring the cards to the Airmen of Niagara that are made by children from schools across the county.

Ethan Brown assigned to Bravo Troop 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry Regiment assists him during training at Youngstown Local Training Area Feb. 24 2019. The two Soldiers trained on how to use the equipment properly and safely in case they had to conduct a debris clearance mission in the wake of a wind storm hitting western New York On Feb. 24/25. The New York National Guard mobilized 250 Soldiers and Airmen to prepare to respond.

NEW YORK-- Air Force doctors negotiating a tactical course at the New York Police Departments Rodman's Neck Outdoor Range administer treaterment to a simulated casualty on January 18 in The Bronx New York. Doctors from several Air Force and Air National Guard rescue wings and special operation squadrons took part in the two week Air Force Special Warfare Medical Officer training course which was conducted by the New York Air National Guards 106th Rescue Wing from Jan. 7 to 18. The tactical training exercise at Rodmans Neck was the climax to the course.

Soldiers of the 369th Infantry Regiment band stand at rest as they wait to march up Fifth Avenue in New York City on Feb. 17, 1919, during a parade held to welcome the New York National Guard unit home. More than 2,000 Soldiers took part in the parade up Fifth Avenue. The Soldiers marched seven miles from downtown Manhattan to Harlem. The band was led by noted musician Lt. James Reese " Jimmie" Europe, seen at center wearing glasses.

The latest iteration of the New York Guard uniform is similar to the uniform worn by the Army and Air National Guard with black and silver name tape instead of the green and black tape. New York Guard members wear a New York State flag on their sleeve instead of the American flag.

German during his retirement ceremony at Stratton Air National Guard Base in Scotia N.Y. on Saturday Feb. 2 2019.German who served as Adjutant General of New York from April 2016 to October 2018 was commander of the 109th Airlift Wing which is based at Stratton from 2006 to 2010. German retired after 36 years of service.

KUWAIT-- U.S. Army Master Sergeant Patrick ONeill assigned with 101st Expeditionary Signal Battalion, New York Army National Guard, fires the M-4 rifle during a life fire exercise at Camp Buehring Kuwait Jan. 16 2019. The 101st ESB has served nine months in support of Operation Inherent Resolve and Operation Spartan Shield providing communications support for more than a dozen operating sites in some seven countries across the Middle East as part of the coalition effort to defeat the Islamic State also known as ISIS. The unit is expected back in New York soon.

Operating any motor vehicle safely in adverse conditions requires planning and awareness. Operating a tactical vehicle in these conditions also requires training and familiarity with the vehicle. But even with all the right tools, unexpected hazards may still quickly create dangerous situations. The New York National Guard Safety office reminds Soldiers to think ahead, focus on PMCS and anticipate road hazards while driving in adverse conditions.
