HAMPTON BAYS NY - Airmen with 101st Rescue Squadron and 103rd Rescue Squadron conduct hoist training with United States Coastguardsmen from US Coast Guard Station Shinnecock December 22 2016.During this training Guardian Angels from the 103rd RQS were lowered via hoist from an HH-60 Pavehawk onto the cutters deck. After that the aircraft practiced dropping and removing patient litters before hoisting the Guardian Angels back up and returning to base.

New York Army National Guard Soldiers from the Queensbury Readiness Center join dozens of military family members and hundreds of friends and community residents for the 13th annual Christmas Eve road march in Glens Falls, N.Y. December 24, 2016. The nearly four mile road march is organized by retired Sgt. 1st Class Art Coon, a former New York Army National Guard recruiter. Joining Coon in the lead of the roadmarch is New York Army National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Adam Barber who Coon enlisted in 2003 and now serves in the same community and Barbers ten-year-old son Matthew. The annual road march began in 2004 when Coon and a dozen or so volunteers turned out to show support to New York Army National Guard infantry Soldiers from the local Glens Falls armory, then deployed to Iraq. NEW YORK-- Kids of Soldiers assigned to the New York Army National Guard's 369th Sustainment Brigade check out new bicycles they got for Christmas at the Brigade's Family Readiness Group Christmas Party at the Lexington Avenue Armory on Sunday, Dec. 11. The unit is currently deployed in Kuwait. The bicycles were constructed by members of a Staten Island Boy Scout troop as part of an Eagle Scout Project

CAMP ARIFJAN, KUWAIT--Soldiers of the 369th Sustainment Brigade celebrate the National Guards 380th birthday with a cake cutting ceremony Dec. 13, 2016 at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. The National Guard is the oldest component of the U.S. military and traces its roots to Dec. 13, 1636 when the first militia regiments in North America were organized in Massachusetts. The 369th SB is a New York Army National Guard unit currently deployed in Kuwait in support of logistics operations in the U.S. Central Command area of operations.

Major David Piwowarski marked the 234th birthday of President Martin Van Buren by laying a wreath at Van Buren's grave site in Kinderhook New York on Monday, Dec. 5.The annual event recognizes the former President Martin Van Buren, a Columbia County native who died on July 24, 1862 in Kinderhook, N.Y. He was born on Dec. 5, 1782.The United States Military honors former presidents by laying wreaths presented by the current president at their gravesites on the anniversary of their birth.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Nearly 200 volunteers from the New York Army and Air National Guard participated in pregame ceremonies at the NFL Buffalo Bills' Salute to Service home game Sunday November 27. The Soldiers and Airmen helped unfurl a large flag for the national anthem and helped escort Bills players onto the field for the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Participants stayed to watch the Bills defeat the Jags 28-21.

NEW YORK-- New York Army National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from Joint Task Force Empire Shield and the Citizens Preparedness Corps training team, New York Guard volunteers and civilian volunteers teamed up to pack Thanksgiving boxes with food donated by Walmart. The program aims to feed 35,000 New Yorkers this thanksgiving.

This is the 29th season that the unit will participate in Operation Deep Freeze, the military component of the U.S. Antarctic Program, which is managed by the National Science Foundation.

SYRACUSE--Members of the New York Army National Guard's Military Forces Honor Guard conduct a dignified transfer of remains for a Korean War Soldier's remains, Sgt. 1st Class Louis Baxter of Massena, N.Y., on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Hancock Field International Airport in Syracuse, N.Y. Baxter was a member of the 7th Infantry Division who was listed as missing in action in November, 1950.

The church event is 1,000th session of the program troops like Wiedenbaum have held since the program began in February 2014. The program provides citizens with the knowledge and tools to prepare for emergencies and disasters, respond accordingly and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions. The Boss Lift program, run by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), invites employers from companies that employ National Guardsmen, or prospective employers, to spend a day working with Soldiers to understand what their employees' drill weekends and service entails.

FORT POLK -- A sweat-soaked Soldier of the New York Army National Guard's 27th Brigade moves through the Army's Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Fort Polk, Louisiana during the brigade's war-fighting exercises there in August, 2001. The unit, now designated the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT), is heading there again for war-fighting exercises in July. FORT DRUM, NY New York Army National Guard Spc. Jarrett Lucas, a member of the 206th MP Company's Detachment 1 located in Utica, N.Y. fires the M136 AT4 Anti-tank weapon at Fort Drum, N.Y. on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 during the company's Annual Training TY-16. The company, stationed in both Utica, NY and Latham, NY, focused on individual, crew, and team proficiency, emphasizing basic Soldier skills encompassed in Army Warrior Tasks.

Brooke Leavitt, members of the New York Army National Guard's Color Guard (right), give drill-and-ceremony training to the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard at the New York State Division of Military Naval Affairs here on May 25. The sheriff's office recently started their own honor and color guard teams, and requested training from the New York Army National Guard's Color Guard and Honor Guard.

FORT DRUM N.Y. -- Using a radio and hand signals, Spc. James Pierce of the New York Army National Guard's 204th Engineer Detachment (Quarry) helps the driver of a front-end loader place a conveyor on a quarry machine known as a "crusher" here on May 14. Operating the crusher, which can turn large rocks into various grades of construction material, is the detachment's main mission. Soldiers of the detachment, which is based in Binghamton N.Y., worked for about 10 hours on May 14 to fix several mechanical shortfalls and ensure the crusher is operational for the detachment's annual training in July. Pierce is from Schoharie N.Y.

LATHAM N.Y. -- Maj. Gen. Anthony German, the adjutant general of New York, speaks during a Memorial Day ceremony at the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs (DMNA) here on May 26. German asked DMNA employees, Soldiers, Airmen and others who attended the ceremony to keep fallen service members in their thoughts during the Memorial Day weekend. Over 100 people attended the ceremony, which was held on DMNA grounds near the New York Military Forces Memorial (right). The memorial depicts an inverted rifle and bayonet with helmet displayed inside a pair of combat boots, most often referred to as a battlefield cross.

About 3000 brigade troops trained here from May 19 to 22 to rehearse for their exercise at the Army's Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Fort Polk Louisiana in July.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- New York Army National Guard aviators of the 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation sling-load a trailer of water, known as a water buffalo, to the New York Army National Guard's 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team here on May 20. The aviators delivered the water buffalo to a supply area maintained by the brigade's 427th Brigade Support Battalion (BSB). About 3,000 brigade troops trained here from May 19 to 22 to rehearse for their exercise at the Army's Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Fort Polk, Louisiana in July. The 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation is part of the New York Army National Guard's 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade.

Named after the late Phillip A. Connelly, a former president of the International Food Service Executives Association, the program is comprised of four categories: Active-duty garrison, Active-duty field, Army National Guard field, and Army Reserve field.

GYPSUM, C.O. New York Army National Guard two CH-47 F models left the Army Aviation Support Facility in Rochester for Gypsum, Colorado on April 18, 2016, all of the aviators and crew members from Detachment 1, Company B, 3rd Battalion 126th Aviation Regiment received certificates from the airport proving they landed at the highest airport in the US. The mountains of Colorado simulate the mountains of Afghanistan in both weather and terrain aspects. This is in preparation for the companys third deployment to Afghanistan now with the Army's newest model Chinook. The Battalion is part of the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade.

CORNWALLIS ISLAND, CANADA-- New York Air National Guard Maj. Matthew Sala taxis in an LC-130 aircraft on the ski-way at Little Cornwallis Island Nunavut Canada on April 13 2016 in support of Canadas annual Operation Nunalivut. Sala was part of the eight-person team from the New York Air National Guards 109th Airlift Wing that prepared the ski-way for LC-130 operations. Nearly 50 Airmen and two LC-130s from the 109th were part of the exercise. This is the third year the 109th has participated.

Members of the New York Air National Guards 105th Security Forces Squadron head uphill at White Sands Missile Range New Mexico on March 20 during the annual Bataan Memorial Death March here. The 26.2 mile march was launched in 1989 to commemorate the American and Filipino Soldiers who were marched 80 miles to prisoner of war camps by their Japanese captors in 1942. Along the way hundreds of the Soldiers died. The march is conducted in New Mexico because 1800 members of the New Mexico National Guard were among those captured.

LEEDS, N.Y. -- Chief Petty Officer Bob Morisseau of the New York State Naval Militia (NYSNM) tests a newly-installed computerized automatic identification system aboard the NYSNM's upgraded mobile command post at the New York Army National Guard armory here on March 10. The system and computerized map displays real-time information on boat traffic in whatever New York state waterway the militia is operating in. Militia members, New York Guard members and New York Army National Guard communications experts also tested the command post's newly-installed radios here on March 10 and 16. The new features will improve the NYSNM's ability to communicate and coordinate with New York National Guard units. The NYSNM and the New York Guard are part of the New York State defense forces and can be mobilized for state-active duty, as was the case during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The NYSNM is the naval component of the New York State defense forces. Morisseau is from Albany, N.Y.

LONG ISLAND--New York Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 642nd Aviation Support Battalion meet employers who took part in an boss lift sponsored by the 642nd Aviation support Battalon and the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve program at Rocky Point Natural Resource Center in Rocky Point N.Y. on Saturday March 12. The bosses met at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Ronkonkoma and took part in an orientation flight on board a UH-60 from the 3rd Battalion 142nd Aviation and A CH-47 assigned to Co. B. 3rd Battalion 126th Aviation over New York City before observing training on the ground. The units are part of the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade.

STILLWATER--Saratoga Battlefield historian and retired Park Ranger Larry Arnold discusses the importance of terrain during the Battle of Freemans Farm in 1777 to Soldiers of the Judge Advocate General Corps from the New York Army National Guard and Army Reserves 7th Legal Operations Detachment on March 12 2016 at the Saratoga National Historical Park in Stillwater N.Y. Arnold is a licensed battlefield tour guide and led the group of 18 legal Soldiers through British and American positions discussing the history of the battlefield and introducing the Soldiers to judge advocate staff challenges related to the laws of land warfare in that era and of the issues of Soldier discipline on the revolutionary battlefield. The troops marched about six miles through the battlefield as part of the training.

Andrew M. Cuomo. He replaces Maj. Gen. Patrick Murphy who will become Director of Plans, Policy, and International Affairs for the National Guard Bureau.

MCMURDO STATION, ANTARCTICA--An LC-130 Skibird from the New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift Wing , like this one sitting on the ice runway near McMurdo Station Antarctica Nov. 9 2015 flew an emergency mission on Saturday, Feb 27, to carry 35 Australian researchers from their base 1,400 miles away across the continent, back to McMurdo. The Australians, who had been working at the Australian Antarctic Division's Davis Station, were supposed to leave on an Australian icebreaker, but the ship ran aground before it could get to them.

NEWBURGH--Staff Sgt. Louis Bonacasa (left) and Tech Sgt. Joseph Lemm, both members of the New York Air National Guard's 105th Airlift Wing's 105th Base Defense Squadron, who were killed in action in Afghanistan on Dec. 21 2015, have been awarded the Bronze Star with V for Valor for their actions that day. The two Air Guardsmen were honored for giving their lives to save other Airmen from a suicide bomber. Four other Airmen died alongside them.

LATHAM, N.Y. -- New York Army National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Theresa Barone-Lopez embraces her daughter Juliana at the Albany International Airport here on Jan. 27 2016. Barone-Lopez was among 50 Soldiers of the 42nd Infantry Division who deployed to Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in April 2015.
