NEW YORK-- New York Guard Commander Maj. Gen. Fergal Foley is awarded the Old Guard of New York City Medal for long outstanding service to the state of New York at the annual Old Guard Ball, here Jan. 28. During his acceptance speech, Foley explained the mission of the New York Guard and added his vision for the state volunteer force, which augments and supports the New York National Guard as required with manpower and skills. The 69th Infantry, and the ancestors of the Virginia Army National Guard units, fought against each other during the battle. The members of A Company visited the battle field to commemorate the event. The unit representatives met along the "Sunken Road" where the Confederates had dug in to resist the Union assault. Members of the 69th Infantry put springs of green in their coats, to mark themselves as an Irish regiment, before they charged the Confederate lines that day.10 Dec, 2012

BEDFORD HILLS--Soldiers from the 827th and 1156th EN’s, comprising Task Force 204th, with assistance from the NYG discuss safely removing a downed tree on Croton Lakes Road, in Bedford, NY. The Guard’s primary role is to clear debris to allow for passage of Fire, Ambulance, and Police vehicles. In Northern Westchester, they are presently working closely with ConEd in Bedford Hills and Armonk to expedite power restoration for their customers. Upon receipt of a request originating from Westchester OEM, Joint Task Force Sandy, based at Camp Smith assigned the mission to TF 204th to assist with tree removal in over a dozen townships. Soldiers receive prioritized areas of operations and are moving from town to town once ConEd ensures lines are de-energized. The 204th EN BN is based in Binghamton, NY and this is the second consecutive year the Battalion has had a prolonged Civil Support Mission for the residents of New York State.7 Nov, 2012

NEW YORK CITY-- Soldiers assigned to the New York Army National Guard’s 3rd Platoon of Company A, 1-69th Infantry rush a patient from Bellevue Hospital on Wednesday night, Oct. 31 after the decison was made to evacuate the hospital. Despite losing power when Hurricane Sandy hit on Monday, Oct. 29, the hospital stayed open using an emergency generator on the roof which was refueled by 1-69th Soldiers carrying five gallon fuel jugs up 13 floors to keep the 1000 gallon tank filled. 150 Soldiers were called out to respond to the evacuation order to move 500 patients after millions of gallons of water were discovered in the basement.31 Oct, 2012

NIAGRA FALLS--A C-130 flown by members of the New York Air National Guard’s 107th Airlift Wing lights up the sky over Lake Ontario as it drops flares during training on Sept. 25. The flares are designed to decoy a heat-seeking missile away from the aircraft. Approaching the restricted airspace over the lake reserved for military use, the navigator readied the defensive systems, the Loadmasters pulled the safety pins, and the pilots positioned the aircraft in the proper formation position. Once in the area, the aircrew dispensed their flares in reaction to simulated threats, lighting up the skies over Lake Ontario.20 Sep, 2012

STRATTON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE , Scotia N.Y. --New York Army National Guard Soldiers from the 42nd Infantry Division load personnel and cargo onto a C-130 Hercules aircraft here on August 10th, 2012. The Soldiers were training to deploy an advance part from the division headquarters, according to Lt. Col. John Andonie, the Division Operations Officer. WEST POINT-Four UH-60 Blackhawks belonging to the New York Army National Guard’s Company B 3-142nd Assault Helicopter Battalion fly over the United States Military Academy at West Point on July 17. DOUBLE EAGLE, N.M. - Pilots and crewmembers of Detachment 1, Company B, 1st Battalion, 126th Aviation practice a pinacle landing above a mesa rise northwest of Albuquerque near Double Eagle Airport. The Naval Militia will be assisting the Border Patrol in ensuring that boaters entering the United States from Canada check at U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Alpha Crew earned the Outstanding Battle Manager Command award for its flawless performance in support of the North American Aerospace Defense Command’s air defense mission and Northern Commands homeland defense mission. The crew monitored air traffic over 1 million square miles of the eastern United States and sorted more than 21,000 flights that appeared as potential tracks of interest or potential airspace violators. LATHAM, N.Y. -- The New York Army National Guard welcomed two UH-72 Light Utility Helicopters to the fleet of rotary wing aircraft operated by its Army aviation units here June 29. The new helicopters were purchased specifically to be used in domestic operations in aid of law enforcement or during state emergencies. The UH-72A Lakota is the newest helicopter to enter service with the U.S. Army. It is a variant of the Eurocopter EC-145 and is manufactured in Columbus, Miss. The Lakota performs light utility and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) missions for the Army and Army National Guard (ARNG) in areas outside a combat zone. Seating capacity of the Lakota is for two pilots and six passengers. Two stretchers can be installed for MEDEVAC missions with a crew of four: pilot, co-pilot and two medics. The helicopter’s large cockpit and cabin windows provide excellent visibility through all quadrants.28 Jun, 2012

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - While the temperature reached a summer time high of 95 degrees, Soliders from Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, A, B and C Troops, 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry spent the week of June 18-22 at Fort Drum familiarizing with various weapon systems. It was the first time the unit was able to pull about 225 Soldiers from Niagara Falls, Geneva and Jamestown as well as some Soldiers from the Buffalo-based Company D, 427th Brigade Support Bn. for support during refocus/qualification training since standing down for an Afghanistan deployment with the 27th Infantry Bde. Combat Team last fall. The 101st also qualified on the new M2A1 .50 caliber machine gun, vehicle mounted .50 caliber, M4 rifles and sniper tactics.22 Jun, 2012

OSWEGO-- Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTAC) assigned to the New York Air National Guard’s 274th Air Operations Support Group on board New York Naval Militia Patrol Boat 280 during a joint Air Guard/Coast Guard/Naval Militia maritime exercise on Monday, June 18. The Air Guard ground controllers exercised with the Naval Militia and the Coast Guard and provided them with imagery of a target vessel from an MQ-9 flying above eastern Lake Ontario.13 Jun, 2012
ISLANDIA-- Retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 Herbert Dargue, whose 43-year military career started as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War, receives a Souvenir of his service-- a customized flight helmet signed by unit members-- from Lt. Col. Mark Slusar, the commander of the 3rd 142nd Assault Helicopter Battalion during the unit Dining In on June 2. The helmet commemorated his service in both the Vietnam and Iraq wars with paintings of a UH-1 "Huey" and a UH-60 Blackhawk. NEW YORK--Major General Robert Wolfe, the commander of the New York Naval Militia, presents the New York State Defense of Liberty Medal to New York Guard Major Michael Lonski on May 23. The film crew from CAPE filmed the coining presentation, Service members on post, and interviewed the services about their experience in receiving APET (Army Profession and Ethics training) while on Joint task Force Empire Shield. TROY, N.Y. -- Aviators from Army Aviation Flight Facility 3 based in Latham spent the morning of Apr. 10 conducting water-bucket training along the Hudson River. Water-bucket training is mandatory for each of the three flight facilities based in New York. CAMP SHELBY, MS-- Soldiers of the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team training on the new AN/PSQ-20 Enhanced Night Vision Googles as they prepare to deploy overseas.The AN/PSQ-20 is a hybrid night sight that utilizes image intensificaiton (like traditional night vision equipment, PVS-7 / 14, etc.) and thermal imaging to create a combined view that provides a Soldier with a hightened situational awareness at night. The system was issued to troops in the 2nd Battalion 108th Infantry. A half day block of instruction trained the Soldiers on use of the PSQ-20 and included a simulated patrol to show the capabilities of the new ENVG’s. The 24th CST is based at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. Their mission is to support civil authorities at a domestic Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Enhanced high-yield explosives (CBRNE) incident site with identification and assessment of hazards, advice to civil authorities and facilitating the arrival of follow-on military forces during emergencies and incidents of weapons of mass destruction terrorism, intentional and unintentional release of CBRNE materials and natural or man-made disasters in the United States the result in, or could result in, catastrophic loss of life or property.13 Feb, 2012
